The bite, much like the surf and weather this week, has been a roller-coaster. The spring blacktip migration and also the pompano migration has slowly started to make its way up the coast. With the days leading up to this latest front we saw several limits of pompano being caught and several nice blacktips being caught also.

For the pompano, hot pink beads and floats with fresh clams, shrimp, live sandfleas being the bait of choice. Tipping with fish bites or fish gum would not hurt, either. The big thing is water temperature — find the upper 60’s and the deeper cuts. Nice larger bull whiting, bluefish, Spanish mackerel are also in the mix with them.

Remember that if you choose to target sharks off the beach, pier, or jetty, you must have the land based shark permit course offered through myfwc.com.

And for those who plan to fish the Surf Fishing Challenge hosted by Roy Matson in less than two weeks and haven’t signed up online yet, the deadline to do so is March 15th. Otherwise you will need to sign up at the meeting on the 19th at the Lost Lagoon. Lots of great sponsors and a fun time for the whole family, be sure to make it out if you can, and I hope to see you there!
