This week we were met with a nice cold front that moved through the area, but the whiting bite was still on fire. North by New Smyrna Beach, the big bull whiting have been the main targets. Fresh dead shrimp, Fish Bites, and the diet Pepsi shrimp have been the preferred bait. The bite has been steady through both tides, but the incoming tide has been best. We are still hitting a few large pompano also on the longer cast with fresh crab knuckles and ghost crabs producing the best results. The large schools of pompano have also made there way into the river from Daytona Beach shores to Edgewater.
The schools of bluefish, Spanish mackerel and jacks have also been cruising the beach following the bait pods. Smaller silver spoons and cut bait have been producing some nice catches of each.
Near the inlet area, the slot sized black drum, flounder, sheepshead and some nice keeper mangrove snapper have been the main targets. Live shrimp, finger mullet and 1/4-1/2 oz jigs with fish bite fight club bodies in the chartreuse fished slowly along the rocks/bottom.
